Fall Decor with the Silhouette

I am so ready for fall! While it's still pretty warm outside, I recently took down the summer decor and am slowing putting out the fall. Maybe if I get ready for fall, Mother Nature will follow!

I was a little bored with my fall decor so I decided to make a couple of new things and am sharing these cute fall luminaries with you today.

These luminaries were super easy to make thanks to Silvia, my Silhouette machine and took less than 20 minutes. I started off with this file for autumn luminaries from the Silhouette store. I then cut it out of a rust and olive colored card stock. I put some vellum on the inside of the luminary where the leaves are cut out. Then I assembled my luminaries securing them with a strong adhesive, popped a battery operated candle inside, and was done!

Super easy and cute on the mantle!

September and Fall Decor

Yay, it's September! I always get excited when September rolls around. There are so many things that happen in September every year - birthdays (ME, my Momma, and Charlie), football, Miracle League Fall baseball season, and although the temps here in the South will still be kinda hot for awhile, it feels like the onset of fall and there are so many, many things that I love about fall.

I debated on the Coley's Corner Facebook page earlier in the week as to when I should begin putting out my fall decor. Is now too early since it is still pretty hot? One person responded saying that she puts hers out on October 1st but that's when I put out my Halloween decor so I have decided that for me the first of September is good for fall decor (though it's not out yet and my cute owlie wreath won't be out for a little while since my team pride wreath is hanging), first of October for Halloween, and first of November for Thanksgiving. I realize I'm probably rushing things a smidge but this was a long summer and I'm just so ready for fall!

When do you put out your Fall decor?

Weekend Wonders: The One with Fall Wreaths

Earlier this week, I shared my cute little fall argyle wreath - with an owlie!

While I was looking for inspiration for my own wreath I saw lots of other cute fall wreaths out there and decided to highlight some of them in this week's Weekend Wonders.

I love the colors of this simple fall felt wreath created by Anne at Lady Anne's.

This yarn wreath made in fall colors at Indie Spotting is beautiful.

Fall Argyle Wreath with an Owlie

I was browsing Pinterest when I fell in love with this fall wreath. I knew I must create something similar and here is what I came up with.....

It really wasn't difficult and aside from the yarn and felt, I already had everything else so it was pretty inexpensive as well. Wrapping the wreath was the most time consuming part - it took about an hour to wrap the whole thing. Instead of telling you how to create the argyle part of the wreath, I'm just going to link you to this awesome tutorial; she has excellent step by step photos.

The letters are just wooden letters I had in my stash from Hobby Lobby. I painted them an off white/natural wood looking color.

I created my owl out of felt from this applique pattern. He does have wings, I just think they are a tad hard to see in the pics since they ended up right against the same colored diamonds. In hindsight, I should have positioned them against the gold diamonds. I used black buttons for the center of the owl's eyes.

Love it! I love fall!

Are you Ready for Some Football?

College football season is upon us! The first game of the season for “my” team (it’s the team of my hubby and son so I assume it’s mine too by default) is Saturday. I have a love/hate relationship with football……

Actually, hate is too strong of a word; I should use dislike. Ok, so I dislike football because from now until the season is over our Saturdays are ruled by the football schedule, more importantly the Clemson football schedule.  If you were to call me and say, “Hey, Coley, do you want to inert-chosen-activity-here on Saturday?” I’d respond with, “Hang on and let me go look at the football schedule.” Seriously, I do and would!

Secondly, if our team should lose (eek, the four letter L word!) J turns into Mr. Grumpy Pants. And while I will always love Mr. Grumpy Pants, I don’t like him. (In the interest of full disclosure, it should be noted that I did know that J was a Clemson football fanatic before we even went on our first date so I wasn't blind sided by this later on in the relationship.) Lastly, I don’t know much about the actual game of football and I don’t really understand it. My brother is appalled by this because we pretty much grew up AT football games and he doesn’t understand how I can’t know much about the game. But I’ll get to why in a second.

I love football season/games for the social aspect of it. My parents are die hard Mississippi State University Fans and we went to games pretty much ALL the time as children growing up in Mississippi. Some of my fondest childhood memories are on that campus with my parents, brother, grandparents, aunts, and uncles. As a young (I’m talking 2-3 years old) the fun part of football games was going up and down all the steps to the bathroom! (I don't know why I found this fun, but my Mom tells me this was all I wanted to do at that age at football games.) Then as I got a bit older, the fun part of games became “cheering” complete in my MSU cheerleading outfit. (See embarrassing picture for proof!) In high school, the fun part of football games was just being there with all my friends and walking the track scoping out the boys. Now, the fun part of football games is either the tailgating , having friends over,  going places to watch the game, and making fun/cute food to enjoy during the game. So now, can’t you see that I was always way too busy doing other things during football games to actually pay attention and learn the basics of football!?!

Happy football season, friends! May your team always win…. Just as long as they aren’t playing ours!

September Days are Here Again

I'm excited for September this year! Lots of birthdays this month (yours truly included), the Miracle League fall season starts, and it means fall is a step closer! I'm so ready for the temps to be cooler, to pull out jeans, long sleeves, and fuzzy socks, and to cook soups in the crock pot.

Every month, I change the desktop background on the computer. I always look at a couple of different blogs and choose one. The one I chose this month features a back to school theme and is from Shabby Princess.

Happy September friends!

Thankful For Frame

This is another craft I whipped up for my Thanksgiving mantel. I thought creating a frame where we could write something we are thankful for each day would be fun. I simply used a frame from The Dollar Store and I had everything else on hand making this an extremely inexpensive project.

Items Needed:
Frame
Paint (optional)
Scrapbook Paper (One printed sheet and one solid colored coordinating sheet)
Ribbon
Dry Erase Marker

What You'll Do:
1. Take your frame a part and paint if desired. I painted my frame green. You could skip this step though and leave the frame plain or buy one already painted.
2. Adhere your printed scrapbook paper to the back of the cardboard that comes with the frame. Reassemble your frame.
3. Cut letters out of plain scrapbook paper using a personal die cut machine to spell out "Thankful For". I used my slice. You could also use stickers if you don't have a die cutting machine. Adhere the letters to the frame.
4. Tie some ribbon to the dry erase marker and then glue it to the back of the frame.
5. Write what you are thankful for, erase it, and write something else!

We Voted

We voted! Did you?

Ok, well Noah didn't really vote but he got a sticker anyways.

Now, I'm watching the results. Interesting indeed.
Our state's governor's race is a real nail biter. Neck and neck.
Interesting indeed!

Thanksgiving Newsprint Decorations

Now that Halloween is over it is time to take down the Halloween mantel and put up a Thanksgiving mantel so I have been working on some Thanksgiving decorations.

When I saw this project at Muse Lodge blog I loved it but wasn't really feeling it as part of my own Halloween decorations but instantly knew that something similar would be perfect as part of my Thanksgiving decor so this is what I came up with........

Simple and inexpensive and adorable!

What ya will need:

  • 3 picture frames
  • Decorative scrapbook page
  • "Newsprint" paper - Like Jennifer at Muse Lodge I didn't want to cut up a book so I made my own "newsprint." I found a version of the story of the first Thanksgiving online that I liked and copied and pasted it into a word document. I then adjusted the font type and size to my liking and printed it out on regular old printer paper. I wanted the paper to have an aged look to it so I tea stained it by putting 2 tea bags in a mug of hot water. I let the tea bags sit in the mug for about 10 minutes then let the water cool. I poured the water into a shallow pan and dunked the paper in the pan for a minute or two. Then I let the paper dry overnight.
  • Glue Stick
  • Brown Sharpie or Brown ink pad
  • Stencil or patterns of a turkey, pumpkin, and leaf - I just googled each object and found a coloring page I liked for each one, saved them to my computer, and then resized them. I then cut each one out and used it as my pattern. (I used this pumpkin, this leaf, and this turkey.)

What ya need to do:
1. Adhere your scrapbooking paper to the cardboard piece that comes with the frame.
2. Trace your stencil pattern for each object on to the back of the newsprint paper and cut out each object.
3. Using the brown sharpie or brown ink, ink the edges of your objects.
4. Adhere each object to the covered cardboard pieces and re-assemble your picture frames.

Your done! Cute, quick, and inexpensive!
