Frankenstein Candle Holder

Today I'm sharing my Frankenstein candle holder with you. I think Frankie is my favorite of all the candle holders. I'm pretty smitten with him.

You'll need:
Candle holder (I used a glass candle holder from the Dollar Store making this a very inexpensive project.)
Clear matte spray
Green paint (I used acrylic paint.)
Black and white cardstock
Mod Podge

How to:
1. Spray your candle holder with clear matte spray and let dry overnight. Be sure and spray this outdoors or in a well ventilated area.
2. Paint your candle holder green. I used two coats. Let it dry completely.
3. Make eyes, hair, a mouth using the black cardstock. I cut the eyes with my circle punch and made the pupil out of a scrap of white with my hole punch. I just free handed the hair in a zig zag pattern and I used pinking shears for the mouth.
4. Brush the entire candle holder with a layer or two of Mod Podge.

And there ya have Frankie. Isn't he cute?

Wordless Wednesday: Finally Fall

It's FINALLY starting to feel like fall in these parts and on Monday we had the first morning cool enough for Noah to wear a jacket (which he hates) and take a lap blanket (which he loves.) He was excited to take his brand new Beatles blanket!

A Cute Ghostie Candle Holder

When I saw this vase in the store, my first thought was that it would make a really cute little ghost. So I bought the vase and brought it home to transform it.

Items Needed:
Glass vase or candle holder (I got my vase at the Dollar Store making this a very inexpensive project and decor item. )
Clear Matte Spray
White paint
Black cardstock
Mod Podge
Ribbion (optional)

How to:
1. Spray your vase with the clear matte spray. It's best to do this outside or in a well ventelated area because it is stinky! Let it dry. (I let it dry overnight.)
2. Paint the vase white. I just used white acrylic paint and I painted one coat, let it dry and then painted a second coat.
3. Cut out circles for the eyes and mouth. You could also do ovals. I just punched these out with my circle punch but if you don't have a circle punch you could free hand them instead.
4. Glue on the eyes and mouth using Mod Podge.
5. Cut your ribbon to fit the base and glue it on using Mod Podge. You could skip this step if you wanted to or you could add ribbon to both the bottom and the top of the vase.
6. Let the ribbon, eyes, and mouth dry then coat the entire vase with a thin layer or two of Mod Podge to seal it.

And now you have a cute ghostie candle holder.

By the way, to be completely safe I plan to use a battery operated candle inside my lil ghostie. And this project only cost me a whopping $1.00 since I had everything but the vase in my crafting stash.

Mummy Candle Holder

In the past I haven't decorated for holidays other than Christmas very much but now in our new house I feel the urge to decorate for every holiday. So this weekend, I was able to spend some time working on some of the Halloween projects I had started so that I can get my Halloween decorations up this week. I'll be sharing (and providing some tutorials) on those items this week.

Today, I'll be sharing this cute little mummy candle holder. He was super easy to make!

Items Needed:
Candle Holder
White paint
White Fabric (I actually used an old t-shirt that we were getting rid of.)
Google Eyes
Mod Podge
Glue gun

1. Paint your candle holder white. (Tip: Spray your candle holder with a clear matte spray before painting it. I did not do this with the first candle holder I painted and the paint didn't go on too well. Then a friend shared this tip with me and I painted another after spraying it with the matte spray and the paint went on much easier, covered better, and looked much better!)
2. Rip up your white material. You could cut it but I cut slits every inch or so and then just ripped it so it didn't look too finished.
3. Brush the candle holder with a light layer of mod podge then start layering your fabric on working it all around the candle holder in strips. When I was ending or starting a new strip I'd just dab on a bit more Mod Podge on that area and it stayed on fine.
4. Decide where you want your google eyes and glue them on. I suppose you could try glueing them on with Mod Podge but I wasn't sure if it would hold the eyes so I used a dab of hot glue from my glue gun. Tuck the google eyes under or beneath one of the layers of fabric a bit so it looks like the eyes are peeking out.

And you now have an adorable little mummy candle holder!

Kid's Halloween Subway Art

Subway Art is all the rage amongst the crafty bloggers lately. Have no clue what subway art is? Well, it's basically words on canvas or a painted board (or something similar.) The words all relate to one subject, like fall or Halloween for example. It basically reminds me of a Wordle and Noah and I used to love making Wordles.

Many crafters are using their Cricut or Silhouette cutters to cut the words and create their subway art. I do have a Slice but I'd have to cut each individual letter for each word and that would be A LOT of cutting.

So, recently I was at Target and saw a sheet of Halloween stickers in the dollar spot that had all different descriptive words relating to Halloween. I thought that it would make cute Subway art and it would be a small project that Noah and I could do together. (He loves any project with stickers.)I bought the stickers, some glittery paper, and a large Halloween sticker. (All from the Target Dollar Spot.)

The other night Noah and sat out to work on it. I had previously glued down the black paper to a piece of canvas I already had. Together we put the large Halloween sticker in the middle. I read the descriptive words on the other stickers to him and we chose which ones to use. I peeled them off and put them about where I thought they should go on the canvas and then he banged patted them into place. He is the best sticker-patter-downer I know!

It turned out pretty cute and was fun for us to do together!

Paisley's Gotcha Day

When we brought Paisley home a year ago, it was not planned. Well, it was sort of planned. We had been talking about getting a dog but I wanted a dog and not a puppy. I wanted a dog that was about a year old. I thought that with a dog about  a year old they'd have some of the hyper puppy-ness out of them and be better with Noah. Ending up with a puppy just kind of happened but in hindsight I am so glad that it happened that way.

She's growing up around Noah and special needs kids and has so much patience with them. In the beginning, she did jump on Noah a bit but she quickly learned not to jump or lick his face. She's grown up going to Miracle League games with us and I'm always amazed and proud at how good she is with those kids. Sometimes they might not be the most gentle hands to pet Paisley but she patiently just sits there and lets them pet her. She's never tried to bite or snap at any of us, well except when playing.

Noah loves her pieces. We all do. She has captured a special place in all of our hearts, turned me into "one of those people," and I'm very glad she came into our lives one year ago today!

Quote of the Week: The Wise Old Bird

"The wise old owl
Sat in an oak.
The more he saw,
The less he spoke.
The less he spoke,
The more he heard.
Why can't we be like
That wise old bird?"

Momma's Helper

Last night after dinner I was standing at the sink washing dishes. Noah was still at the table finishing up and I turned to check on him and this is what I see.

He was bringing me his plate! First time he has ever done that and I didn't even suggest it or ask him to or anything. He just did it all on his own!

Wordless Wednesday: Kisses for Momma

I had my Dad snap this picture last week (on my birthday) before Noah's first Miracle League game of the season. I adore this photo - it's now one of my faves!

Dressing Up Canned Candles

Ya know those little candles you can buy in the tins? Well right now, Michael's has two new fall themed scents in the canned candles that I'm in love with. One is called "Autumn Breeze" and the other "Fall Foliage" and they both smell like fall. Love it. The problem? It only comes in the canned candles and those are just displeasing to the eye.

So, I got to thinking that I could just cover it with scrapbooking paper. All I did was cut scrapbooking paper to fit around the side of the tin using the tin as my guide and glued it on with my fantabulous glue stick. Easy peasy! If you were giving these as a gift you could also trace the lid and cover that with paper as well.

I did one with some cute fall polka dot paper. That one didn't need anymore embellishing. I did a second one in brown and gingham paper and then used one of my birthday gifts, a Martha Stewart owl punch, and punched out a few brown owls and glued those on the sides. Now, look at how cute they are!
